Three beaded Christmas Spool Ornaments by Diane Masters

Jennifer VanBenschoten
Trying to find time to bead during the holiday season can be hard. I always had visions of spending my evenings making grand and intricate holiday ornaments for our tree, but could never seem to find the time. If you're one of those folks who wants to add a little beaded holiday cheer to your tree (or to someone else's), these Christmas Spool Ornament patterns by Diane Masters are the perfect idea!

Available through Sova Enterprises and Bead-Patterns.com, these patterns are for five spool ornaments plus a mini-spool ornament with the year. The five patterns included in Collection one are a gingerbread man, train, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus, and candles. There are other collections available as well that include more holiday designs.

The patterns are printed in both a more traditional peyote graph format as well as an "exploded" format that shows each row individually in a graph form. This exploded format made the stitching so simple for me that it took me only about two hours to complete each ornament without having to use a magnetic board or sticky notes to read the graph. The exploded format of the peyote graphs will make these patterns easy and fun for beginners, and for more experienced beaders, much more enjoyable as a "quick stitch" for a fun holiday gift idea.

Perfect for holiday ornament exchanges or package embellishments, these ornaments can be made quickly and with small amounts of Delica beads. I had plenty of beads in my stash that even though they were not the exact colors specified in the pattern worked very well in my beadwork. These ornaments are a great way to use up leftover Delicas from other projects, or for beginners, a great reason to expand your palette of cylinder beads.

The wooden spools are available from Sova Enterprises in packages of three or bulk packages of 18. Mini spools are also available in packages of 10 or bulk packages of 100.

If you're in a hurry, buy the spools at your local craft shop and download the patterns from Bead-Patterns.com and print them yourself. You can also order the patterns from Sova Enterprises.

I really enjoyed stitching up these little spool ornaments, and they were a quick and delightful way to spend an evening with my family during the holiday season.
