The Thread Zap Thread Burner by BeadSmith

Jennifer VanBenschoten
For years, I resisted buying a thread burner. I wanted to solider on using a lighter to secure my thread ends close to my beadwork. Then I saw the Thread Zap thread burner in a display at a bead show and I decided to buy one - my beadwork has never been the same.

The Thread Zap by BeadSmith is a wonderful tool for getting those thread ends trimmed and secured, without the hazards of using a lighter or a match to melt tiny thread ends. It works with both nylon beading threads such as Nymo and Silamide as well as fishing-line type threads like Fireline and Wildfire.

The Thread Zap works by pressing a button that causes the metal tips to heat up to approximately the same temperature as the flame of a lighter or match. Because the tips are so fine, they allow for precision application of the heat to the exact spot where you want to melt and secure your thread ends. The size and shape of the Thread Zap make this tool very comfortable to hold and easy to use.

To use the Thread Zap, you simply press the button located on the side of the tool for approximately ten seconds until the tip heats up. You will sometimes see a slight wisp of smoke to indicate that the tips are hot enough to use. While you continue to hold the button down, apply the tips of the Thread Zap to the thread end where you want to melt and secure your thread. Allow a few seconds for the thread to cool before touching the beadwork in that area, and always make sure you replace the cap.

The elements in the tip of the Thread Zap will eventually wear out, so they must periodically be replaced. Replacement tips are available from most places where you purchase the Thread Zap. The Thread Zap runs on a regular AA-size battery, and one is included with the product.

To purchase the Thread Zap, contact the BeadSmith to find a bead store near you, or go to the Sova Enterprises website to purchase.
