Using a Velvet Jewelry Pad as a Beading Surface

From , former About.com Guide

A velvet jewelry pad is a piece of plywood or other stiff material that has been covered with a soft fabric. They are generally used as displays for finished jewelry, but many beaders have discovered that they make wonderful beading work pads.

Velvet jewelry pads come in a wide range of sizes and colors, so you are likely to find one that works for you. A light colored velvet pad will make it easy to see most bead sizes and colors. They are sold in the catalogs and websites of many jewelry and beading supply companies.

Because they are stiff, they are great for beading on your lap when a table isn't available. However, velvet jewelry pads don't have high sides so care should be taken not to tip them which will cause the beads to spill. One solution is to fit them into a picture frame or cardboard tray to keep the beads from spilling onto the floor. (Many of the suppliers who sell the velvet jewelry pads also sell vinyl-covered cardboard trays that they will fit into and will solve the problem of beads spilling off the pad.)

Pros:

  • Smooth surface for beading also lets you store your needles nearby
  • Velvety material prevents beads from scattering too far
  • Wide range of colors and sizes available from most jewelry supply companies
  • Great for beading on your lap when no hard surface like a table are available

Cons:

  • Can cost more than other beading surfaces
  • Not always easy to find
  • No high sides mean you must take care not to spill your beads unless you fit the pad into a tray or picture frame
