This graphic illustrates how to count rows when working in flat peyote stitch, a popular off loom beadweaving stitch.

Flat peyote stitch looks almost exactly like brick stitch but turned on its side. Peyote stitch is done when the beads are stitched to one another by offsetting one bead from the ones in the previous row. There are different turns made at the end of each row when working in flat peyote stitch, depending on if you are using an odd number of beads or an even number.

When counting your rows in flat peyote stitch, you will count the last two beads on the outside edge of the beadwork. To correctly count the number of rows, you will need to zig-zag back and forth between the bead on the outer edge (outside bead) and the bead next to it on the inside (inside bead) of the beadwork.

The rows in flat peyote stitch cannot be counted in the same way as the rows in tubular peyote stitch.

Do not try to count the rows of flat peyote stitch in the middle of the beadwork. It is easy to become disoriented and lose your place, particularly if you are working an intricate pattern with several different colors.
