How to Do Beadwork - How to Use a Double-Strand Thread

Using a double strand of beading thread by sliding the needle down to the center of the thread.

Jennifer VanBenschoten
When doing beadwork or bead weaving, most the stitching is done using a single thread. There are times when using a double strand of beading thread is necessary.

How to Thread Your Needle With a Double Strand:
To thread your needle with a double strand of thread, you can either thread your needle with one end of the beading thread and then slide the needle down to the center of the thread. Use the thread the same way as if it were a single strand.

You can also thread your needle by threading the two cut ends of the thread into the eye of the needle. This method is more difficult because you may have trouble getting both ends of the thread into the eye of a beading needle, particularly if you are using a thinner needle or are using a heavier thread.

When to Use a Double-Strand Thread:
Only use a double strand of beading thread when your project directions call for it, or if you are using beads with particularly large holes. If you are using beads with large holes, using a double strand of beading thread may help you maintain the proper tension as you stitch.

Drawbacks to Using a Double-Strand Thread:

  • When using a double-strand thread, remember that it may tangle more than if you were using a single strand and that the knots may be harder to remove.
  • Correcting mistakes may be more difficult as well, since you may have to cut the thread to remove the needle and then remove the beads one at a time.
  • Using a double thread will also leave you two tails to weave in instead of just one.

While there is a time and place for using a double strand of beading thread, make sure that it is the best option for the project.
