The Problem:

A bug in Netscape Communicator causes an error message to be generated when you try to print some framed pages, including mine unfortunately. If you recieve a message reading "There are no pages to print!" when you try to print these pages you are most likely experiencing this problem.

What We Can Do About It:

We cannot force Netscape to behave properly. What we can do is offer a few interim solutions until the problem is fixed.
  1. Here is a new solution that should work for everyone using Netscape Communicator.

    1. Go to the Edit menu and choose Preferences from the bottom of the list.
    2. In the Preferences dialog box click once on Advanced in the category section.
    3. A list of options will come up. Uncheck the box next to "Enable Javascript."
    4. Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
    5. Click once in the frame you wish to print.
    6. From the File menu, choose "Print Frame."
    7. Once you finish printing, you may want to go back and re-enable javascript, otherwise some features on other pages might not function properly.

  2. One of my dear readers came up with the best solution so far. Simply click once in the frame you need to print to select it and choose Send Frame from the File menu. Fill in the To: box with your own email address and click send. Viola! You have a nice printable web page in your mailbox. You must be using Netscape mail for this to work properly though. Thanks Melinda!

  3. Use a different browser. If you have a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer (many new computers come with it pre-installed), try using that to print instead. An earlier version of Netscape (prior to 4.0) will work too. If you do not have Internet Explorer installed, it can be downloaded for free at: http://microsoft.com/ie/download/
Previous versions of Netscape Navigator are available at: http://www.netscape.com/download/nav_download.html?navigator3.03

These programs are large and take a considerable amount of time to download. An alternative to these programs is a browser called Opera which you can download from http://opera.nta.no. I reccomend it for it's speed and small size. The download is under one megabyte as compared to up to 10+ for Netscape and Explorer. This program is available as a 90 day free trial.

  4. I have decided to discontinue the practice of sending these features out as word processing documents via email. The files tend to be too large to email comfortably and the process takes more time than I've got. Instead, all new features will include "printer friendly" pages which are not framed and contain no advertising which should save you ink as well as making it possible to print the feature with any browser. In addition, I will be adding printer friendly pages for older features as they are requested. If you come across an older feature that you are having trouble printing, let me know and I will post a printer friendly page for it as soon as I have time. Thanks for your patience!
