Olaf Beadwork

8 1/4 X 11 3/4, Paperback, color covers, B&W graphs. $69.70

This is one of the most unusual and fun sets of books currently available.

Lynda Pederson, who is the delightful publisher and one of the designers, is from Australia but most of the patterns are Northern European in origin. According to the distributor, Charlene, the origin of these patterns are as follows: "From what I understand about this Scandinavian technique is that The Danes adapted the techniques used by the Greenland Eskimos and translated it into more modern designs."

These patterns are written for use with a specific bead, a size 9/0, which is not readily available in the United States or in the U.K. However, thanks to the Internet, we can order these particular beads from sources here in the U.S, and I have heard that some of the forms used in creating these pieces will be available soon, too.

Also, I am told by one of the designers, Lynda Pedersen, that the patterns will work with size 11/0 beads, as well, and I have had reports that this is, indeed, true. The only projects that cannot be made to work with Size 11/0's are those projects which are designed to fit over a form.

As for patterns, these are so cool! Earrings, bracelets, collars, doilies, wall hangings, lighter covers, ornaments, baskets, loom weaving, key fobs, you name it!! Designed by many different beaders in Australia, they are graphed in black and white, and are very readable. Instructions are very detailed, and look a little intimidating at first, but once you get started, they are easy to follow.

There is a color cover depicting many of the projects covered, and starting with the second book, there is a two-page center spread with photos of more of the projects.

These is also a separate Holiday Patterns book available, please inquire of Charlene at 5Z'S, the U.S. Distributor of these fine books.

If you are a beader interested in new and unusual stitches and techniques, you will want to own these wonderful books. As time goes by, I'm sure that the specific supplies outlined in them will become more available. Meanwhile, enjoy them using available beads, and create some really cool new goodies!
