"Now where do I start? Was it when I won a painting competition at the age of four, or was it the frequent trips to my extremely glamorous Aunts house, she had drawers full of glittery things. I can remember the feeling of excitement when I was allowed to fondle and sometimes take home a little piece of her treasure, that I decided that when I grew up I would also have drawers full of gleaming treasures.
I sucked at Math and Science at school, but was great at art, so I went on to study graphic art at St Martin's in London. Eventually I became a display artist and also painted designs on guitars for rock bands. I loved painting until that fateful day about twenty years ago when I found BEADS. I bought a loom and lots of beads and started making 12 inch long earrings. I was hooked. Painting was still my main love until I found a book called How To Do Beadwork by Mary White, from that book I learned peyote stitch although Mary called it diagonal weave, again I was enchanted. Years later another book changed my life completely, it was called Creative Bead Jewelry by Carol Taylor and I was totally amazed at how far Beadwork had come in the USA. That was a turning point in my life and I have never looked back.
My approach to beadwork is very different. I never follow patterns (although I love to create them for other people) I like to make things that are totally unique, I am never scared to try something new and go with the flow, totally in love with the colours and textures of the beads. I am now concentrating on creating totally 3D sculptural pieces, not jewelry, not functional, but I hope, interesting.
I would love to teach beadwork in the UK and in the US too if you'd have me. I have achieved my childhood dream of owning many, many drawers full of glittery treasures. Still trying to work on a book about medallions and pinecone beaded beads.
I would like to thank Sarah Frazier (Beadnik) for making my website, Morticia's Magical Bead Tour. Sarah did a great job and gave me the opportunity to be one of the first British bead artists on the web.
Hope you like the pattern it's called Abstract Fuchsia and is quite
challenging. Finally thanks Paula for having me as Spotlight Artist."
And I would like to thank Linda for being our Spotlight Artist, and for her beautiful pattern. I know you'll love it!
Also, be sure to check out Linda's Website for more of her wonderful beadwork! She is an incredible designer, and this is a beautiful site. I am particularly taken with her "Lotus" pattern, but they are all fantastic!
