How To Bead Native American Style

Full Circle Communications 1996

Produced by Scott Swearington and Sandy Rhoades $19.95 each

This series of five instructional videos are a must have for any serious beader. Each video runs 30 minutes, and have an interview with a Native American Master Bead worker, appropriate to each lesson.

Volume One focusses on "How To Do Loomwork" and includes all the information and a great step-by-step tutorial. The use of an oversize model for teaching is a great addition to the value of this lesson. Loom building instructions, pattern design and more are included. Running time: 25 minutes.

In Volume Two we learn how to embroider with Lazy Stitch beadwork. Again, the trademark large scale model for teaching is employed. Extensive discussion of pattern design and stitch execution are again used. Clear and easy to follow, with great ideas for using this wonderful stitch! Running time: 30 minutes.

Volume Three is the single best instructional I've seen on the traditional Native American Peyote Stitch. Clear and concise, it teaches how to use this complex stitch by working a simple project. An excellent tutorial. Running time: 38 minutes.

In Volume Four Medallion Work is the lesson. Using the "larger than life" method again, we learn many ways to create and use medallion work, including use of the running stitch, drawing the design and using edgings. Running time: 30 minutes.

In Volume Five we learn Two Needle Appliqué Stitch. From starting the design,, through making row adjustments, adding thread and correcting mistakes, this is an outstanding bead appliqué lesson. Include tips on color and design as well as finishing and mounting the work. Running time: 30 minutes.

Each video comes with a card outling the lesson, providing a graph and including more information to help you design with the particular technique. An excellent value, I cannot recommend these enough to any beadwork interested in Native American beading, design, history and technique.
