What Do You Keep In Your Amulet Bag? |
Beadwork Readers Talk About Their Beaded Amulet Bag Contents
The first answer comes from Janie Warnick:
I have a lot of bags. I sometimes put a new shiny penny in the smaller ones, and the larger ones often hold a small medallion that means a lot to me.
I don't put flaps on my bags, so I never thought about putting anything in them. One day, someone innocently asked, "What's in the bag?" "Nothing," I replied as I turned it upside down. Imagine my surprise when out poured little bits of potato chips! Ever since then, I've been careful to place something inside that I could carefully remove without disclosing my inveterate snacking.
Carolyn Thomas has some special plans for her next bag:
I am making a bag right now to hold something very special. My husband is in very poor health and my oldest son now lives out of state with his wife. Our younger son is getting married soon and may also move away. In order to keep us all together in spirit I am getting a lock of hair from everyone, myself, my husband, my sons, and my "daughters." I will take this hair and mix it up and seal it in plastic to put in my bag. This way when ever I feel lonely I will just slip my bag around my neck and I will be with my loved ones.
Lissa McCollum says:
For myself...it changes. Sometimes a special momento such as a hand struck coin, or a clove. Sometimes something very practical--my house key, a $20 bill, a business card. I made one for my brother and put in a Herkimer diamond. And...I had a commission for one just the right size to carry a condom. Needless to say, I put a cap on that one, so you couldn't see into the bag with a casual look. :)

A friend went white water rafting down the Grand Canyon. At the very bottom a woman with her picked up some stones. She was Hopi. She told her they were the center of the earth, the creation, from where we came. She gave my friend the same stones and they were given to me. They will be part of my bag when it is completed. Right now, I carry them in my fanny pack.

A friend gave me a large fossil shark tooth to put in my amulet bag to remind me to be more aggressive in selling my artwork. (It didn't work. I don't like "selling".)
Brendalea (Typo Queeen) had this to say:
In one of my bags, my very first one that I wear with much pride, though I had no visual help to go by and was only able to make it with help from the beadwork list. I had NEVER seen an amulet before, nor knew what it was for. But anyhow.........I carry:
My Father's (long since deceased) 25 Good Driving Pin (he was a truck driver)
A lock of my Mother's hair
A dollar bill that one of my Brother's made into a ring when we were in high school and he told me that with the ring I would never be poor. I've had some **very** tough times, but never poor!
One of my only Daughter's baby teeth.
A fingernail clipping from my oldest Grandson (3 yrs old)
And yet to get some to represent my youngest Grandson (4 months old yesterday)
An amethyst stone for myself
I look forward to reading what others carry, if anything.!
