BIO OF ALAN GREYOWL

As a boy, I learned how to bead from my grandmother. Then, as boys often do, I grew and left behind her teachings, chasing after a fast life filled with alcohol, parties, and women. When I began to crawl out of the hole of alcoholism, I returned to the old teachings, and took up my beads as a way to heal.

My beadwork comes from the heart. In our teaching, each bead sewn or strung is a prayer, so the wearer carries with them many prayers. Many of the original works I've done come to me in dream time from my grandmother. It is comforting to me to know that even from the other side she still teaches me.

I am thirty eight years old. My father is Cheyenne from Oklahoma, my mother is Irish from Colorado. I enjoy the outdoors, practice native spirituality through the sweat lodge and the pipe, as well as other traditional ceremonies. I have made many mistakes in my life and now walk the red road seeking to be a true human being in developing the four aspects of my being: spiritual, emotional, physical, and intellectual.

On July 31st, 1999, I married my best friend and soul mate, Mart. She is Nez Perce, and we had a traditional Indian wedding, followed by our own flavor of a state-sanctioned wedding. She enjoys making necklaces, but leaves the intricate seed bead work to me (men do have more patience, don't they....) :-)

I hope to learn how to get published as I finally have enough original patterns for a book. So, perhaps one day soon you'll see my first one on the shelf of your favorite bead shop. Until then, you can visit our website to see some of our work.

And don't miss the lovely White Buffalo pattern and picture from Alan.

And please join me in thanking Alan for being our Spotlight Artist.
