The current decorating themes seem to be streamlines, basic, bare-bones and plain. Clean lines, good proportions, wall graphics, and even furniture are spare, with clean edges and very angular detail.

Softness seems to be out of style at the moment, which is too bad. Nothing is more comforting than a big, squishy sofa covered with beautiful, soft, handmade pillows. There's almost no better way to spend a couple of hours than with a wonderful facial mask and a handful of beauty magazines or some simple beadwork to do while reclining in an old, well-padded Diva-style chaise lounge (half armchair, half sofa) and just relaxing. Slipper chairs, with their comfortable level for the vertically challenged are out, as are those big, double size armchairs that are almost a love seat. And with that, the highly adorned, beautiful, tastefully accessorized items such as wall sconces, and my favorite - the Victorian beaded lampshade are not seen as much as they should be, as far as I'm concerned.

But why not? Why can't a basic, square lampshade for a very contemporary lamp have a edgy, angular fringe of beads around the bottom? Or, in a ladies' bedroom or lounge, nothing gives off a nicer glow than a lovely silk lampshade in a pale pink, with an intricate and lovely opalescent fringe of beads around the bottom of the shade. There's no reason why these lampshades have to be outcasts, even when the spare and angular look is in. Consider beading the tiny shades of the lamps on your chandelier for a bit more glitter and better, more flattering lighting for your dinner guests. Or, make one as a gift to a friend, someone like myself; a holdout against the spare, modern and sometimes cold look of the current decorating styles that are currently in vogue.

Lynne Quinn posted pictures of her Victorian Beaded Lampshade that garners a great deal of attention, mostly from readers asking her to share her beaded lampshade secrets. That's not too surprising, since her lampshade is absolutely gorgeous! Lynne has kindly allowed us to share her beading technique for making these lovely beaded lampshades. Here is a Complete Instructions for making your own Victorian Beaded Lampshade.
