In honor of World Intellectual Property Day (which, of course, was yesterday), Beading Daily is offering a new free ebook about copyright law. It's called Know Your Rights: Copyright 101 for Beaders, and you only need a free membership with Beading Daily to download a PDF copy.
The 11-page ebook begins with a "Just the Facts" section, which covers the most basic information about copyright. If you have general copyright questions about patterns or tutorials, there's a good chance you'll find the answer there.
The rest of the ebook is presented in question and answer format, with more details and examples of situations that you might find yourself in. These are categorized by role, such as questions "For Crafters" and "For Designers, Authors, and Publishers." Here are some examples:
- If I change a certain percentage of an original copyrighted work, does it become mine?
- What is fair use?
- Can I make and sell projects I found in a book or magazine?
If you teach beading classes, you'll also find sound advice about using copyrighted patterns and projects as teaching tools.
This is a great resource, and I think it's fantastic that Interweave (publisher of Beading Daily and Beadwork magazine) is making it available for free. It's fair and not one-sided, and it covers the copyright questions that I receive most often. Nice work!
